![]() ![]() There was extensive flooding during Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 and a battle with property managers to keep the store's iconic street-side sign when the Alabama Center, which houses the store, was remodeled in 2003. The store had several retail outlets that endured ups and downs in the '80s before all resources were consolidated into the 9,000-square-foot space at West Alabama and South Shepherd.Įven then, the store endured difficult times. The Dailys opened Cactus Records in 1975. Daily sold the store to Bud and Don in 1959. He moved into the record business in 1946, opening Daily's Record Ranch, a store that sold records for under $1. The elder Daily left an accounting job with Southern Pacific railroad in 1933 and opened a downtown store on Travis, selling coin-operated jukeboxes. The end of Cactus Music & Video closes a chapter in Houston's music history that began with the Daily brothers' father, H.W. Bishop started circulating a letter this week to vendors and other business ties that announces the closing. The store also has less inventory to move after the holidays than at other times of the year. If all we have is the Best Buys of the world, then we don't have much control there." A part of historyĬactus' closing is timed to the end of the business quarter. "Cactus closing is a big deal if other retailers won't put (a band's) product out. "The place has personality and a lot of artists work there as a hub," says Calvin Stanley, lead singer of Pale, one of the many local bands that stocked its CDs in the store. "The places where people can congregate to talk about and listen to music are disappearing quickly."Īrtists were a big part of that community. "Music is such a part of people's lives and we have created such a community here," says Quinn Bishop, the store's general manager for the past 20 years. Though electronic distribution of music looks to be the industry's future, some music fans will always prefer a centralized brick-and-mortar destination. The sad reality for fans of independent retail stores - those that offer eclectic and local titles and host in-store performances by artists - is that few investors are interested in picking up the reins in this kind of business climate. Meanwhile, digital music distribution has spiked: More than 350 million songs were sold digitally last year. CD sales nationwide fell 21 percent in 2005 from the year before. ![]() But the poor state of the music business might explain why the Daily brothers have been unable to find a buyer for the beloved store. ![]()

However, it barely engages with Manson or the stories around his so-called “family” of followers, or what is significant, in cultural terms, about the murders they committed in Hollywood in 1969. “What Mary Shelley shows us is what a bad idea this really is, and how male hubris really does monstrous things with motherhood.T his shambolic but not entirely uninteresting low-budget horror flick clearly aims to cash in on the continuing public fascination with 1960s cult leader Charles Manson, who died in prison in 2017. Really, he wants to create life without the intervention of women,” he said. “Her story is about a man who wants to be God, but he also wants to be a mother. It is not insignificant that almost all of these scary movies about protagonists’ relationships with their mothers are directed by men.īut Lowenstein maintains that the genre’s mommy issues began with a woman, and long before film: Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 horror novel, “Frankenstein,” is often considered to be the inception of modern horror. ![]() And Ari Aster clearly understands the connection between these things.” “We think horror and we think fear and dread and haunting, but we don’t necessarily think guilt, shame, humiliation. “When I left ‘Beau Is Afraid,’ I heard a teenage woman ahead of me walking out of the theater saying to her friends, ‘That just made me want to call my mom and say I’m sorry for everything,’” Lowenstein recounted. The movie – about a man trying to get to his mom’s house – is as much a surrealist epic as it is a horror movie.Īnd while Aster’s third movie is admittedly less scary than his “Midsommar” or “Hereditary,” another film that exploits the terrors of family dynamics and mother-induced trauma, it is safe to conclude by the end that Beau’s fear of his guilt-inducing mother was warranted. In Ari Aster’s new “Beau is Afraid,” the central theme is the fear and pain that can come from the mother-child bond. “It just lent itself to this exploration of maternal fears and what it might mean if your mother was to turn on you.” “I think it’s very terrifying to imagine somebody so familiar to you in your world becoming a subversion of that, and becoming something really dangerous and evil,” said director Lee Cronin. “ Evil Dead Rise,” now available to rent on streaming services, plays with the fear-inducing extreme of a mom being possessed by a demon. Other films let the dynamic between mother and child carry the drama. Zach Cregger’s “Barbarian” (2022) also turns breastfeeding into a spectacle, not from an inviting yet depraved sexual partner as in “Infinity Pool,” but from a monstrous maternal creature who forces her victims to feast. While the genre has often been dismissed as low-brow, Adam Lowenstein, a film and media studies professor at the University of Pittsburgh who specializes in horror, said it is well-suited for grappling with these kinds of deep-seated, psychological issues. In one talked-about scene, Gabi (Mia Goth) exposes her bare chest to James (Alexander Skarsgård) in an invitation to breastfeed, revealing a complicated tension between his actual mother and his understanding of Gabi as his new one. The director, after all, has surely learned a thing or two from his filmmaker dad and giant of the genre, David Cronenberg. It’s no surprise it was replete with disturbing moments. ![]() Take, for example, Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” which became one of the buzziest films to come out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Since the genre’s inception, horror movies have tapped into the psychological trauma and terror that can only come from a mother, and a number of recent films are embracing that time-honored tradition. ![]() LOS ANGELES (AP) - If you’re stumped for how to spend this Mother’s Day, consider relishing a good scare. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's a boring, repetitive slog.Survival games are some of the coolest genres in gaming. It's like the original game with all the humor, tension, excitement and awesomeness sucked out of it. The original Subnautica was and still is a masterpiece, but Below Zero is extremely disappointing. All in all, there is little to recommend here. You're just going through the motions and It gets tedious very quickly. Without all the wonderful things that made the original game so great, you're only really left with the worst aspects of it, namely the repetition of resource collection. The iconic music from the first game has been replaced with blander and less memorable themes. There are some new items to build, and the addition of land-based monsters to avoid, but that's about it. There's no sense of danger or dread, and little has been done to expand upon the mechanics of the original game. The deeper you went, the scarier things became. The better the gear you acquired, the deeper down into the ocean you could go. Progress was carefully paced, with expertly crafted level design. The original Subnautica had so much atmosphere and was genuinely terrifying at times. It's such a huge departure from the original game that wisely put you, the player, at the heart of the story. Robin likes to talk about her feelings a lot. The game constantly reminds you of this by means of internal monologues as Robin tells you how she feels about the objects she finds, the dreams she has, or her thoughts on music. Instead of you, yourself, being the protagonist, you now play as a woman named Robin. In Below Zero, your PDA is now inexplicably voiced by the sound of an irate tech-support scammer. It's incredibly immersive to be lost in this hostile alien world with only your PDA (a computer assistant with a beautiful, soothing voice that reminded me a lot of Scarlett Johansson) for company. In the original game, you, the player, are the protagonist. The quality of writing and narrative choices in Below Zero are vastly inferior to its predecessor. Most importantly, they got rid of the genius guy who wrote the original story and lore. There are some major differences between the two games that make Below Zero a hollow and unsatisfying facsimile of the original. The same great visual design is still there, but something felt off from the get-go. So it was with great anticipation that I looked forward to the release of the sequel, Subnautica: Below Zero. But I couldn't get this to work even for the examples in that topic, which switch colour rather than shape I don't even know how to begin finding the right escape codes to change the cursor shape. It appears to be possible to send custom escape sequences when switching modes: the termcap-cursor-shape help topic explains how. MacVim nicely distinguishes between insert and normal mode by switching between bar and block cursors. Removing that and installing the vim-nox package instead rectified that. This was because the version of vim installed on Ubuntu by default via apt-get install vim does not include Ruby support, even though it does include most of the other options. But one of the ones I use most of all - the excellent Command-T file navigator - did not. As I said above, most of these just worked by copying over my. Not too much to learn - I might try and force myself to use those within MacVim, for the sake of consistency. In the terminal, the first of these continues to work, but since the tabs are now vim's own ones, switching needs to be done by the vim shortcuts of gt and gT. MacVim overrides vim's built-in tabs with proper native ones, so that you can open them in the standard way - eg opening documents in new tabs via :tabe - but then switch between them with the standard OSX shortcut keys, cmd. vimrc, and hey presto: mouse in terminal vim. The main issue is that although there is a well-defined way for an xterm terminal to send mouse events, the OSX Terminal app doesn't support it. Recently I found myself working on a project that was distributed on a self-contained virtual machine, and after several days of mucking around with mounting the VM's filesystem via sshfs and suffering continued networking drop-outs, I decided to bite the bullet and move to working entirely within the terminal.
